30Nov08: Tye Ebel

I walked a small section of the Shikoku 88 Temple Circuit a few weeks ago as part of a project headed by Kagawa prefecture.  We were fortunate to have nice weather and a fun group. Despite wearing down a bit near the end, I found the 18 Km walk to be very enjoyable. I have lived in Kagawa for over a year now, and visited several of the local temples on my own, but it was great to have a guide this time to explain about the pilgrimage in greater detail.

As a travel enthusiast, I know the excitement of getting off the beaten track. I have visited over 28 countries so far, and countless tourist attractions. Despite the obvious appeal of places like Machu Picchu, the Taj Mahal, Angkor Watt, Pompeii or the Eiffel Tower, there is always a drawback due to the hoards of other tourists who lend the sites a theme park atmosphere. The great thing about coming to Shikoku for the temple pilgrimage, especially as a foreigner, is that it really gives you a chance to relax and enjoy rural Japan while taking in a famous and historical part of Japanese culture. I highly recommend a visit to anyone looking to escape the crowds on Honshu for an accessible, yet very different side of Japan.
